Using PBwiki Accounts

What's a PBwiki Account and why should I use it?

(This service is also known as My PBwiki or your PBwiki Homepage)

The PBwiki Account allows you to get a list of your users and easily manage them. It also provides a central point for you to manage your own logins to other wikis that you own or visit.

Create your own personal account

1. Go to my.pbwiki.com and sign up for your PBwiki Account (PBA).
2. You will get an email to the address you use to confirm it's a valid address.
3. Click the link in the email to validate the email address you are using.
4. Fill out your password and profile settings at my.pbwiki.com

Remember your Identity login is different

When you create your PBwiki Account, you have to choose a password. You may even choose the same words that you use for other services such as a Wiki Invite. If you are visiting someone's wiki for the first time, you have to get an invitation from the owner if you want to become a member of that wiki.

Why didn't I have to log in when I returned?

We place a cookie on your computer that tells us who you are and what wikis you can access. This allows you to enter a wiki without having to log into it. I've noticed that I rarely need to log into my wikis.

The login cookie does have one draw-back. Anyone using your computer and also using your account on that computer could automatically be logged into all of your wikis. If you share an account on a computer, or if you are using a public computer, be sure to log out of all of your wikis when you leave them.

Add other wikis

Now you have a PBwiki Account. The next steps will allow you to add wikis to your identity.

  • If you are logged into your identity, and also at a wiki, you may find this wiki is already listed at my.pbwiki.com as being available for use.
  • If it is not listed, just add it by typing in the wiki name (leave off the pbwiki.com part) and then put in the password.
Now that all the wikis you visit are listed, you may find that it's best to login at my.pbwiki.com instead of going directly to your wikis.

Adding other users to your wiki

Your PBwiki Account is a great way to add users to your wiki, but you may need to use other methods to invite people if it fits you better. If you have a Premium wiki, you can also invite people to join your wiki at a specific Access level.

  • Log in at my.pbwiki.com and click the link to enter your wiki. (If you don't see the link to your wiki, add it by entering the wiki name and wiki password. Then click the link to visit your wiki.)
  • Go to Settings
  • Go to Users
  • Now you can add and remove members of your wiki.

What will your members see when you invite them as a user?

  • They will get an email asking them to confirm the address by clicking a link in the email.
  • If they don't have an Identity, they will be prompted to create one.
  • If they are logged in with a PBwiki Identity, they will be granted immediate access to your wiki.
  • Your wiki will be listed in their personal my.pbwiki.com page as a wiki they have access to.

How do I promote, demote, or remove members?

  • While logged in at my.pbwiki.com, go to your wiki and click on Settings.
  • Then click on Users.
  • You will see a list of your members.
  • Use the pull down beside the member to set their status.

How do I get rid of invite key users?

After you have your members all using the PBwiki Accounts, you should change the passwords to their access levels so that they are always forced to log in by going to my.pbwiki.com.

Do you have someone you want to boot from ever using your wiki?

If you give anyone one of your wiki-wide invite keys for Reader, Contributor, Moderator, or Administrator, then they will always have access until you change those keys and remove them from the membership list in the Users section. Just removing them from your membership list in the Users section won't keep them out, nor will just changing the key. You must do both in order to boot them for good. A free pbwiki has only one invite key.

By using your PBwiki Account, you will never have to give anyone a password. Your wiki can be very secure using a Pbwiki Account.
